BATCH ANALYZER DRAMATICALLY SHORTENS HEALTHPLAN SERVICES BATCH WINDOW
ABOUT OUR CUSTOMER

BUSINESS CHALLENGES
HealthPlan Services regularly develops and enhances many DB2 for z/OS applications. As with many IT organizations, DB2 DBAs and Application Developers are responsible for ensuring optimal performance when new or enhanced SQL statements are deployed in production. Additionally, they must watch all production SQL for performance degradation over time. This comprehensive process requires large amounts of effort and often identifying the most costly batch SQL which should be tuned first is a difficult and time-consuming process.
THE SOFTBASE SOLUTION
"SoftBase Batch Analyzer is a great product!", said Patty Pritchard, Senior Database Administrator at HealthPlan Services.
"We've had the product installed for about 1 1/2 years now and have found many SQL statements that were running far longer than we expected. It's just amazing how quickly Batch Analyzer can zero-in on SQL statements consuming the most DB2 batch CPU cycles."
More specifically, HealthPlan Database Administrators (DBAs) and Application Developers are using Batch Analyzer to:
- Locate where expensive test and production SQL is located based on the Job name
- Determine which batch Jobs run long due to DB2 performance problems and which don't
- Identify batch Jobs encountering DB2 deadlocks and timeouts
- Locate DB2 batch Jobs which could ROLLBACK for excessive amounts of time
"Batch Analyzer has found several unexpected batch DB2 SQL problems", said Ms. Pritchard. "One example is a SQL statement that was placed into production over a year ago and was initially running just fine. The data volume grew dramatically in one of the tables used by this query and Batch Analyzer showed us that the statement was now running much, much longer. After building just one index, the statement execution time dropped from over 4 hours to 9 seconds! We might never have noticed this SQL statement's performance had degraded so badly without Batch Analyzer."
"Another example is a long running Job identified by Batch Analyzer that we were certain had DB2 performance problems but ended up being a minor VSAM problem. We reduced execution time from over 2 hours to about 20 seconds. This product is very enlightening in what it can uncover."
