Las Vegas, N.C. — October 24, 2011SoftBase, a leading provider of DB2 for z/OS coding, testing and deployment tools that accelerate application development, today announced the completion of its first annual DB2 Developer Survey on the state of application testing and monitoring. The survey, which cites key trends for programmers and DBAs to consider in the coming year, spotlights issues that prevent them from taking full advantage of the functionalities of DB2 10, shows resource and performance expectations are out of balance and the mainframe will remain a vital platform.

SoftBase polled more than 250 application programmers, developers, DBAs and managers across various industries on the current application development conditions within their DB2 environment. Among the most critical findings of the survey shows that the majority of the DB2 for z/OS development community remains committed to the mainframe architecture for developing and executing applications and has yet to consider alternatives. However, even with the continued confidence in the mainframe, the survey found that a perceived lack of efficient testing tools has resulted in slow industry adoption of DB2 version 10.

Additionally, DB2 professionals indicated they face greater pressure to produce quality applications in less time and with varied levels of resource availability.

“By uncovering the issues that are most important for developers and DBAs, we hope to help lead improvements that better the DB2 experience for everyone across the industry,” said Steve Woodard, president and CEO of SoftBase. “As industry standards and development processes continue to change, the findings from this survey can help DB2 leaders ensure their teams are prepared to meet the demands for successful application coding, testing and deployment.”

Other findings include:

  • Time is an issue while 73 percent of respondents said their companies have the same or greater testing resources on hand, 44 percent said they have shorter windows to test and deploy applications than a year ago;
  • The Mainframe isn’t Dead as 72 percent of those polled will remain on the mainframe or have yet to explore alternative platforms;
  • Improving SQL is Key for Successful Testing as 71 percent said more in-depth SQL search capabilities is the most important functionality in a DB2 testing tool;
  • Database Updates are still a Work in Progress — While 74 percent of those surveyed are currently using DB2 v9 or later, only 7 percent of them are using DB2 v10.
