We had a great turnout yesterday for our webinar 6-Steps to Determining if DB2 Multi-Row Fetch is Right for Your Shop. Scott did an excellent job explaining how to identify the programs and cursors with the highest potential savings from MRF and how to calculate the overall potential CPU savings from implementing MRF. Our DB2 Tech panel also did a terrific job answering attendee questions during the Q&A session.
Watch the video replay of the presentation below. The actual presentation ends at about the 18:50 mark, the remainder of the video includes the detailed Q&A session with our DB2 tech panel. Enjoy!
SoftBase’s latest DB2 test data management solution further improves development productivity and reduces database backup time.
TestBase helps DB2 shops test new database applications faster and with fewer resources, reducing both time to market and overall development costs. The newest version, 5.1.0, includes several features that enable faster manipulation of test data, faster database archiving, enhanced performance with large data sets, and improved usability. These new features include:
Longer names supported – 128 character names
DB2 v10 functions supported
Edit data in tables without indexes
Image Copy Extract supported
Allows use of DB2 Unload utility
Partitioned Slice enhances performance with large data sets
Renamed Definitions and Procedures
Here’s what one of our customer’s had to say about the new features:
“TestBase 5.1 has been a HUGE time saver for our operations. We currently house upwards of 300 million rows in TestBase databases, and with the new features of 5.1 we are able to delete and load this amount of data in less than an hour, as opposed to over 12 hours using SQL deletes and inserts. We are able to partition the databases in the best way possible for our customers, while being able to control the integrity of the database and its functionality. We currently execute TestBase via batch to take nightly backups of over 200 databases, and with 5.1 we have been able to cut our batch processing time from 12 hours to 4 hours. We are completely happy with the changes, new features, and time savings that utilizing TestBase 5.1 has brought to us. TestBase has always been a great product, but the improvements from 4.5 to 5.1 are phenomenal! We love the TestBase product, Neal [TestBase Product Manager], and SoftBase in general!” –IT Specialist, Large Federal Government Agency
Craig gave another great presentation yesterday on how to control your rolling four hour average (R4H). When you’re on variable workload licensing, understanding and controlling the R4H is critical to keeping your monthly bill in check. Craig discusses how you can directly restrict the R4H using soft capping and how techniques like tuning DB2 can reduce your overall CPU consumption – and subsequently your R4H. You can download Craig’s presentation slide deck here.

We’ve seen a huge response to the Sheryl Larsen webinar we sponsored yesterday, titled “Find Lost Money in your SQL: Efficiently Finding and Fixing High Resource Consuming SQL”.
It was an incredibly informative and educational webinar, in which Sheryl showed us dozens of ways to reduce CPU usage. At the end of the webinar, we talked breifly about our new ROI calculator for multi-row FETCH, which estimates the amount of money your shop will save over a 5 year period by implementing multi-row FETCH manually, or by using SoftBase’s Attach Facility MRF feature which automatically retrofits your applications for multi-row FETCH. You can input a few variables, and we’ll generate a custom 5-year savings and ROI forecast, specific to your shop! It’s quick easy, and a little fun! Here are a few neat examples of what we’ll create for you (did I mention it’s FREE?)
We had a great turnout at the webinar – 581 database professionals dropped in to listen to Craig talk about implementing muti-row FETCH. He showed some VERY impressive savings. The video below is a replay, the entire video is an hour.
The MRF feature of Attach Facility is a very hot topic right now – Craig talks about it in the webinar towards the end. It will allow you to implement multi-row FETCH without making any coding changes! Wouldn’t it be great to save 74% FETCH statement CPU by flipping a switch!
